Alonso, Mets introduce home run horse: 'I think it's working so far'

Pete Alonso took the Toronto Blue Jays for a ride twice Friday, and then he went for a ride with the New York Mets' new rally prop in the dugout.

"It's the home run horse," the first baseman said after leading the Mets to a 3-0 win over the Blue Jays, according to the New York Post's Zach Braziller. "I don't know if we have a name for it."

Alonso, the reigning Home Run Derby champion, hit his 20th and 21st round-trippers of the season Friday. He credited hitting coach Hugh Quattlebaum for coming up with the celebratory horse.

"I think it's working so far," said Alonso, who's now bashed four homers over his last four games.

Manager Luis Rojas didn't sound quite as enthusiastic about the horse.

"I freaked out one time when I looked at the end of the dugout in the middle of the game," he said. "I was completely unaware that was happening. But these guys have fun, they do different things. I shouldn't be surprised, but I kind of was when I saw it."

The Mets earned their fourth win in five games. They'll face the Blue Jays again Saturday and Sunday before hosting the Atlanta Braves for five pivotal contests.
