Blue Jays lose after questionable call costs potential game-tying run in 9th

The Toronto Blue Jays nearly mounted a ninth-inning comeback against New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman but came up short after a couple of calls went against them.

The biggest blow came when Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez allowed what appeared to be a passed ball, only for it to be ruled a foul off the bat of Lourdes Gurriel Jr. even though he never made contact.

Both runners initially advanced but were sent back after umpires discussed the call on the field. The decision may have cost Toronto the game-tying run as Teoscar Hernandez did touch home plate on the play.

Foul ball calls are not eligible for review.

This came not long after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was ruled out on a tag at third base when he attempted to score on a ground ball to Chapman. It appeared he may have been safe but the call was upheld after review.

With the loss, the Blue Jays have now dropped three straight games and sit 1 1/2 games back of the Yankees for third in the AL East.
