Harper 'feels safe' at ballpark but worried about pregnant wife, baby

Add Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper to a growing list of MLB players who don't feel great about returning to the baseball field in 2020.

The All-Star slugger said Friday that he "feels safe" at the team's stadium, Citizens Bank Park, but that it's still an uncomfortable situation considering his pregnant wife and their young baby, according to John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

"It gets to the point where you are kind of uncomfortable, just because I do have an infant at home, I have a wife at home - I have a pregnant wife at home," Harper said, per Howard Eskin of WIP Sports Radio. "So I mean, I'm just trying to do everything possible to prevent anything from happening. ... So I understand why certain individuals will be possibly not very optimistic about this, or, you know, just don't feel comfortable.

"I was definitely in that boat as well before I came here, thinking to myself, 'Should we go? Is ... something bad gonna happen to my pregnant wife or my child?' ... I think this is just something that we all have to kinda get used to a little bit and just try to do the best we can."

The 27-year-old went on to joke that the air high-five is going to be the coolest thing in sports this year, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

Harper's comments come on the same day that Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout publicly questioned whether he would play this season, citing his pregnant wife's health and safety as his top priority.

Chicago White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito and Minnesota Twins catcher Mitch Graver have also voiced concerns about suiting up amid the coronavirus pandemic.
