New York upsets top-seeded Los Angeles in 1st TGL semifinal
The New York Golf Club upset the top-seeded Los Angeles Golf Club 6-4 in the first TGL semifinal Monday night.
New York, led by Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, and Cameron Young, entered the singles component of the match with a 3-2 advantage. The team secured the victory on the 14th hole after Tommy Fleetwood missed a key putt that would have kept Los Angeles alive.
"They gave us a little gift there," Fowler said. "Not the way we wanted to win, we wanted to close out in style, but we'll take it and we’re looking forward to next week."
This was Los Angeles' first regulation loss of the season.
"New York played great and we had our chances," L.A. star Collin Morikawa said. "I didn't play great and I take responsibility on that. You have to make putts in this format. ... We weren't getting the ball in the hole first. That matters a lot. It sucks, because I feel like we had a nice rhythm throughout the season. Still love these guys ... it just happened to not be our day today."
Los Angeles - which also features Sahith Theegala - won its regular-season meeting over New York 5-4 in overtime back in February. The club entered the 12th hole down 4-0 with a 2% chance of winning the match, and the stunning comeback secured its spot in the playoffs.
New York, meanwhile, lost its first two games of the campaign but clinched the last playoff seed with a victory versus Boston Common Golf in early March.
"We're all pretty happy," Schauffele said. "We thought it was possible but we knew it was gonna be a long road, so we're definitely happy to be here."
The Bay Golf Club and Atlanta Drive GC will square off in the second semifinal Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
New York will face the winner of that clash in a best-of-three final for the SoFi Cup. The championship series kicks off Monday, while the second match will take place the following day. If a third round is required, it will also be held Tuesday.
