NBA player turned golf amateur JR Smith required assistance after irritating a nest of wasps during a college golf tournament Tuesday morning.

The North Carolina A&T freshman was playing in the second day of his debut competition for the school when he was suddenly attacked by the stinging insects. He walked away and tried swatting them before a medical cart was called.

Smith was on the 12th hole of the Phoenix Invitational at the Alamance Country Club and searching for his ball in the woods when the incident happened, according to Elon University student video engineer Jared Bunder. Elon University is hosting the event.

The two-time NBA champion double-bogeyed on the par-5 hole and finished the day with a 5-over 41, according to Golf Channel's Brentley Romine.

Smith, 36, enrolled at North Carolina A&T in August following 16 seasons in the NBA.
