Camryn Rogers wins hammer throw for Canadian golden sweep

Camryn Rogers won gold in the women's hammer throw Tuesday in Paris, becoming the first Canadian woman to ever medal in the event.

It's a hammer throw golden sweep for Canada at the 2024 Paris Games after Ethan Katzberg won the men's competition Sunday. It's only the third time in Olympic history that the same country won both gold medals and the first time it's been accomplished by a country other than Poland.

Rogers qualified for the final with a 74.69-meter throw and earned gold with 76.97 meters on her penultimate toss, putting her nearly 1.5 meters ahead of the rest of the competition. By the time she stepped up for her final throw, she had already secured gold.

Annette Nneka Echikunwoke of the United States took the silver with 75.48 meters. She is the first American woman to medal in the event and the first person from the U.S. to medal in hammer throw since Lance Deal in 1996.

China's Zhao Jie was the bronze medalist at 74.27 meters.

Rogers is the reigning world champion, having claimed gold in Budapest in 2023 with a 77.22-meter toss after capturing silver at the world championships the year prior.
