Detroit Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch indicated there's a chance the organization won't adhere to Dylan Larkin's trade request this season.
"Yes, he could be here all year," Ilitch told The Detroit News, per NHL.com.
He added, "All I can do is say Dylan Larkin is under contract. He's a Red Wing. He's coming back to our camp to play for our team this year. We're going to do everything we can to support Dylan and ensure he's able to reach his full potential."
Larkin requested a trade in June following his 11th season with the Red Wings and their 10th straight without a playoff appearance. The 30-year-old reportedly submitted a list of four teams he'd accept a trade to: the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights.
Many believed a trade never materialized over the summer because general manager Steve Yzerman stepped down from his role in July. Detroit didn't name a replacement until Tuesday, tabbing Shawn Horcoff as interim GM.
The Red Wings stripped Larkin of his captaincy earlier in September and announced he will attend training camp. Ilitch intends to keep conversations about Larkin's future behind closed doors as the season begins.
"Dylan's a great player," he said. "He's an important part of our team. Any conversations about his future are gonna stay private between Dylan and our front office."
Larkin registered 67 points in 74 games last season and won Olympic gold representing the United States in Milan Cortina. He's under contract through 2031 at a cap hit of $8.7 million.
