The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Chris Kreider to a one-year contract, the team announced Saturday.
The deal is worth $2.15 million, per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Kreider became an unrestricted free agent earlier this week after being placed on waivers by the Anaheim Ducks to terminate his contract.
Kreider had one year remaining on his deal with a $6.5-million cap hit when the Ducks cut him. Anaheim needed financial flexibility after signing Leo Carlsson to an $18 million annual contract, which was initiated by a lucrative offer sheet from the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Canadiens didn't make any notable additions this offseason after reaching the Eastern Conference Final in the spring. Kreider should bring valuable experience to a young Canadiens team and bolster a left side that previously lacked depth behind first-liner Cole Caufield.
Kreider registered 22 goals and 50 points in 75 games last season, his first with the Ducks after a 13-year run with the New York Rangers that included nine 20-goal campaigns.
During his tenure on Broadway, Kreider was a teammate of Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis and played for Montreal president Jeff Gorton, who served as the Rangers' general manager from 2015 to 2021.
Kreider was once public enemy No. 1 in Montreal, after a collision with Carey Price in the 2014 Eastern Conference Final knocked the star goaltender out of the playoffs.
