Knies embraces bigger role on Leafs: 'Going to make me better'
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies acknowledged that expectations for him will be higher this season, but says he's ready for a larger spotlight in the NHL's biggest market.
"I want that feeling that I'm playing for the whole city," Knies told The Athletic's Joshua Kloke. "I don't really look at it as something that can tear me down. It's something that is going to make me better."
Knies is entering the first campaign of a six-year, $46.5-million contract and is expected to help fill the offensive void left by Mitch Marner's departure.
The 22-year-old posted 29 goals and 58 points in his second full NHL season in 2024-25. He added five tallies and two assists in the playoffs before the Florida Panthers eliminated Toronto in Game 7 of the second round.
Knies said he's hopeful to build upon a breakout season that helped earn him a spot at the USA's Olympic orientation camp this summer.
"I have to perform better and take on a little bit more ice time or take on a bigger role. If that's what's needed and expected, then you know I'm going to be ready for it and hopefully successful in those areas," Knies said.
He added that he's honed in on one area he believes can help him take another step as an emerging star.
"I want to get as physically dominant as possible," Knies said.
Toronto drafted Knies in the second round in 2021. He joined the Leafs at the end of the 2022-23 campaign following a prolific collegiate career at Minnesota.
