Report: Chargers plan to hire McDaniel as OC
Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is expected to become the Los Angeles Chargers new offensive coordinator barring a late change of heart, sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington and Adam Schefter.
The 42-year-old McDaniel has been courted by the Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore Ravens, and Cleveland Browns for the head coach job this offseason. He reportedly informed the Browns earlier Tuesday that he was withdrawing from consideration for their vacancy.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles each pursued McDaniel as their top OC target, per Darlington. The Bucs were diligent in their chase, but the opportunity to work with quarterback Justin Herbert was too appealing.
McDaniel is credited with building an explosive offense during his tenure with the Dolphins. After establishing a top-five unit in 2022 and 2023, Miami struggled to recreate the success from their first two seasons under McDaniel's watch.
Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh dismissed former OC Greg Roman on Jan. 13 after two seasons with the club following a disappointing playoff exit in the opening round. Roman previously worked for Harbaugh during his time coaching Stanford and the San Francisco 49ers (2011-2014).
