Report: Steelers open to Rodgers returning in 2026
The Pittsburgh Steelers are open to quarterback Aaron Rodgers returning for the 2026 season, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
However, a reunion remains unlikely after Mike Tomlin stepped down following a 19-year stint as the franchise's head coach, Schefter adds.
Steelers players reportedly expressed during their exit meetings that they wanted Rodgers back as the starting quarterback, praising the four-time MVP's status as a respected leader in the locker room.
Pittsburgh is searching for just its fourth head coach since 1969. Whoever the franchise chooses to lead going forward will likely influence whether Rodgers returns or moves on, according to Schefter.
"Look, Aaron (Rodgers) came here to play for Mike (Tomlin). So I think it would most likely affect his decision," Steelers president Art Rooney recently said about Rodgers' future, according to NFL Network's Nick Shook.
He added: "I'm sure the quarterback position will be an important part of this discussion with the candidates. We'll have to develop a plan for going forward."
Rodgers led the Steelers to a 10-7 record and an AFC North division title in 2025. They lost 30-6 to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round at home, mustering just 175 yards of total offense. Out of 30 qualifying quarterbacks during the regular season, Rodgers ranked 22nd in EPA/play and 28th in success rate, according to Ben Baldwin's database.
The 42-year-old signed a one-year deal last offseason to join Pittsburgh and is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. Mason Rudolph and Will Howard are the only two quarterbacks under contract for the 2026 season.
