49ers' Shanahan: Injured Purdy 'long shot' to face Saints
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn't express optimism regarding quarterback Brock Purdy's status for Sunday.
Shanahan called Purdy a "long shot" to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 due to a left shoulder and toe injuries, according to The Associated Press' Josh Dubow. Mac Jones is in line to start for San Francisco.
Purdy, who missed practice Wednesday, could be sidelined for multiple weeks, Shanahan added.
The 49ers passer threw two interceptions in the season opener versus the Seattle Seahawks. However, he also passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning score to Jake Tonges in the final minutes.
Purdy signed a five-year, $265-million extension in May. He's battled multiple injuries since the Niners drafted him 262nd overall in 2022. The team is 24-13 with him under center.
Jones joined San Francisco this year after spending 2024 with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 27-year-old has 49 NFL starts under his belt, most of which came as a member of the New England Patriots from 2021-23.
The 49ers also have quarterback Adrian Martinez on their practice squad.
