49ers release Floyd after 8.5-sack season
The San Francisco 49ers released pass-rusher Leonard Floyd, the team announced Tuesday.
Floyd joined the Niners on a two-year, $20-million contract during the 2024 offseason. He registered 8.5 sacks with the team.
The 32-year-old will now look to join his fourth franchise in as many years after stints with the Los Angeles Rams (2020-22) and Buffalo Bills (2023). Floyd began his career with the Chicago Bears, who drafted him ninth overall in 2016.
The Georgia product collected at least eight sacks in each of the last five seasons, including a career-high 10.5 in 2020 and 2023.
Floyd's departure leaves an open spot in San Francisco's front four opposite Nick Bosa. The 49ers have reportedly shown interest in signing Nick's brother, defensive end Joey Bosa, who was recently released by the Los Angeles Chargers.
The 49ers have lost multiple defensive starters this offseason, including linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga, who both reportedly agreed to sign with the Denver Broncos on Monday.
