Glenn: Jets' split with Rodgers upset some players
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn admitted Tuesday that moving on from Aaron Rodgers upset some players on the team, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.
The Jets confirmed earlier in February that they told Rodgers they would head in a different direction at quarterback. The decision prompted defensive lineman Quinnen Williams to post a thumbs-down emoji on X, which he later deleted.
Glenn said he's talked to Williams about the post.
"I understand it, but again, listen, this is not going to be the last decision I make that's going to upset some people, and that's OK," Glenn explained. "But as men, we talk about it. We make sure we keep it in-house, and that's what we're going to continue to do."
General manager Darren Mougey said Rodgers is expected to be a post-June 1 release, which will spread the veteran's $49-million dead-cap penalty across 2025 ($14 million) and 2026 ($35 million).
Glenn suggested it wasn't fair that Rodgers was the team's biggest storyline.
"I don't want to disrespect any of the players we have on our team, and it kind of pisses me off and some of the other players that that's what we all talk about," Glenn said. "You have Quinnen Williams, you have Quincy Williams, you have an AVT (Alijah Vera-Tucker) and now you have Joe Tippmann. All those guys need to be respected as far as winning games also."
The Rodgers era in New York was a bitter disappointment. The 41-year-old tore his Achilles four snaps into his first season with the team and returned in 2024 to produce a 5-12 record. Last season, he threw 28 touchdowns to 11 interceptions while completing 63% of his passes for 3,987 yards.
Mougey also said Tuesday that the Jets would address the future of wide receiver Davante Adams in the coming weeks.
