Report: Colts view Richardson as likely 2025 starter
The Indianapolis Colts view quarterback Anthony Richardson as their presumptive starter for the 2025 season, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Colts' brass is pleased with how Richardson responded to his benching earlier in the season and impressed with how his attention to detail and preparation improved following the demotion, Rapoport adds.
Richardson won't play Sunday versus the New York Giants due to back and foot injuries. The ailments aren't considered long-term issues. Veteran signal-caller Joe Flacco will get the start.
The 22-year-old was benched in early November for two weeks after entering the year as the starter. Head coach Shane Steichen said Flacco gave Indianapolis "the best chance to win" at the time but added the team wasn't giving up on Richardson as its future QB1.
Flacco struggled during his two games as the lead quarterback, going 0-2 with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Steichen went back to Richardson on Nov. 17, and the former fourth overall pick is 3-2 since regaining the job.
Richardson ranks 30th in EPA/play and 32nd in success rate among 34 quarterbacks with at least 275 snaps this season, according to Ben Baldwin's database. He's racked up 2,313 yards with 14 total touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 contests.
The 7-8 Colts still have a chance of making the playoffs heading into Sunday's game against New York.
