Raiders' Pierce unsure what went wrong with Adams: 'Ask Davante'

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said Monday that he doesn't have any updates regarding Davante Adams as Las Vegas continues to talk to other teams about potentially trading the star wide receiver.

"Status quo," Pierce said, according to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez.

Adams reportedly informed Las Vegas recently that he would like to be traded after only two full seasons with the Raiders, who acquired the three-time All-Pro wideout from the Green Bay Packers in 2022 for a first- and second-round pick.

Pierce - who had his interim tag as the Raiders' head coach removed this past offseason - said he's not sure what led to Adams requesting a trade.

"I don't know. I think you've got to ask Davante that," the sideline boss said Monday.

Adams joined the Raiders to play with quarterback Derek Carr, his college teammate at Fresno State. Adams posted a 100-1,516-14 stat line in his first year with Las Vegas, but the Raiders parted ways with Carr at the end of that season and have since struggled at QB.

Adams did top 100 catches and 1,000 yards again in 2023 but repeatedly voiced his frustration throughout the season before the team finished with an 8-9 record. The 31-year-old played Las Vegas' first three games in 2024 but missed the last two contests with a hamstring injury.

Several teams have reportedly reached out to the Raiders about Adams, including the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Pittsburgh Steelers. Las Vegas was looking for a package featuring a second-round pick in exchange for the star pass-catcher, but the sense around the league is the Raiders will likely end up receiving a third-rounder, notes The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

Adams - whose contract does not include a no-trade clause - would reportedly prefer to land with the Jets or Saints because of his familiarity with quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Carr.

Reaching an agreement with the Raiders regarding Adams' 2024 salary has been an issue for potential suitors. Las Vegas doesn't want to pay down his contract, but the market is suggesting they'll have to, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

Adams, under contract through the 2026 season, is owed $13.5 million for the rest of the 2024 campaign. That amount drops by $970,000 each week.

The Raiders prefer to get an Adams trade done "sooner rather than later," sources told NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
