Bears' Williams: 'I will be better' after 93-yard debut
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams promises better play in the future after a lackluster NFL debut against the Tennessee Titans.
"Obviously, it's great to get this first win. We're all excited. Went to the locker room, celebrated," Williams said after the game, per Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
"I sat down, enjoyed the moment, just watching all the guys celebrate, understanding that I need to be better, I will be better."
Chicago won the contest on the back of its defense and special teams, as the Bears' offense only produced three field goals on 148 yards. A pick-6 and a blocked punt returned for a score elevated them to a 24-17 victory.
The Bears are the first team in NFL history to win a game in which they trailed by at least 17 points and had fewer than 150 total yards, according to Turron Davenport of ESPN.
Williams completed less than 50% of his throws for only 93 yards and a 55.7 passer rating. He failed to complete any of his five pass attempts over 15 air yards and had a negative 16.1% completion over expectation, per Next Gen Stats.
"We want to be the most efficient team out there, myself included," Williams added. "Didn't perform the way that I wanted to. I missed a few passes that I normally don't miss, all these other things."
The No. 1 overall pick became the first quarterback in league history to have 25-plus pass attempts, under 100 passing yards, less than 3.2 yards per attempt, and zero touchdowns to win a game, per The 33rd Team.
Chicago will take on the Houston Texans on Sunday Night Football in Week 2.
