Broncos GM: Zach Wilson 'has starter tools all over'

Zach Wilson may not be the starting quarterback on the Denver Broncos' depth chart, but the team doesn't seem to lack confidence in his abilities.

Broncos general manager George Paton threw his support behind Wilson on Tuesday, telling reporters he could "throw it as good as anyone in the league."

“No doubt," Paton said when asked if he believed Wilson can become a starter in the league. "He has starter tools all over. It's been pretty cool just watching him with really no expectations. He can just go out there and play football. He has all the traits. He has all the starting traits in the world. He's still working through some things."

He added: "He can throw it as good as anyone in the league. I mentioned before, he's smart, and he's a great kid. He has starter traits all over. I do think he will be a starter in this league."

Wilson cracked the Broncos' initial 53-man roster as the franchise opted to keep three quarterbacks, with rookie starter Bo Nix and veteran Jarrett Stidham also making the team.

"We think highly of the quarterback room," Paton said. "I really liked the process. I thought the competition brought out the best in really all of the quarterbacks. All these guys support each other, they compete, and they work well together."

The Broncos tabbed Nix as the starter earlier this month, with Paton pointing to the impressive "poise, the maturity, and efficiency" that the first-round signal-caller has demonstrated.

Denver opens the 2024 season on the road against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 8 at 4:05 p.m. ET.
