GM says Browns won't sit Mayfield: 'He's healthy enough to win games'

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry reiterated there's no plan to make a change at quarterback, even with a struggling Baker Mayfield playing through a multitude of injuries.

"Baker's our quarterback. He's healthy enough to win games," said Berry on Wednesday, according to Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. "If he's ready to go, he's our starter."

Cleveland began the season 3-1 before losing five of its next eight games, all but ending the team's hopes of winning the AFC North.

Mayfield, who's dealing with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and a knee injury, reinjured the shoulder and was forced to miss Week 7. Backup Case Keenum stepped in and led the Browns to a win over the Denver Broncos.

In the five games since returning from his one-game absence, Mayfield has thrown for 939 yards and five touchdowns against three interceptions while completing just 56.1% of his passes.

Although Cleveland remains in the hunt for a wild-card spot, the club faces an uphill battle - only teams with winning records remain on their schedule.

Some have called for the Browns to replace the limited Mayfield with Keenum for the team's final stretch and allow the young signal-caller to heal.

But after Sunday's loss to the division-leading Baltimore Ravens, head coach Kevin Stefanski said Mayfield would remain under center following their Week 13 bye.

The 2018 No. 1 overall pick is in line for a contract extension this coming offseason, but Berry doesn't believe that is weighing on Mayfield, whom he lauded for his physical and mental resilience, according to The Chronicle-Telegram's Scott Petrak.
