New York Jets running back Le'Veon Bell is aiming for a Week 5 return against the Arizona Cardinals, barring a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

The Jets placed Bell on the injured reserve ahead of Week 2, making the Oct. 11 matchup the earliest date he can re-join the active roster. Players must miss at least three games when placed on the short-term injured reserve list.

The tailback was removed from New York's season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills after tweaking his hamstring. He returned briefly, but the 28-year-old spent most of the second half on the bench. Head coach Adam Gase later said he regretted putting Bell back on the field when the veteran was hurt.

Bell also battled hamstring tightness in training camp, but he denied there was anything bothering him physically at the time.

Frank Gore and La'Mical Perine will continue to carry the load for the Jets at running back Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.
