The Arizona Cardinals are bringing in free-agent running backs Jay Ajayi and Spencer Ware for workouts, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

The development calls into question the health of starting rusher David Johnson.

Johnson was limited in practice late last week with an ankle ailment. Though he was available Sunday, he only received one carry in the Cardinals' win over the New York Giants. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said postgame that the plan all along was for Johnson to play only if he was needed.

It turns out he wasn't, as backup Chase Edmonds went off for 27 rushes, 126 yards, and three touchdowns, leading Arizona to victory.

Nonetheless, the Cardinals are exploring adding help to their backfield. Ajayi hasn't played since Week 5 of last season. He's been recovering from a torn ACL and was recently medically cleared to return to game action. Ware spent the previous four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, most recently in a backup role.
