Real Madrid and France superstar Kylian Mbappe has avoided a serious knee injury and could return to action in around two weeks, reports soccer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Real Madrid confirmed Mbappe hyperextended his left knee during France's 1-0 win over Turkiye in Friday's UEFA Nations League match, but didn't provide a timeline for his recovery or details about his treatment plan.
"Following tests carried out today by Real Madrid's medical department on our player Kylian Mbappe, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee," the Spanish club said in a statement.
Mbappe limped off after scoring the lone goal in France's victory Friday.
The goal, Mbappe's record-extending 67th for the national team, gave French icon Zinedine Zidane a victory in his debut as Les Bleus' manager. Zidane said Mbappe, the France captain, "extended his knee" on the shot that resulted in the game's only tally.
The 27-year-old, clearly in pain immediately after scoring, briefly tried to play on before being substituted. He left the France camp after the match and returned to Spain to undergo scans on the injury.
Real Madrid's first match after the extended international break is Oct. 10 against Villarreal. It's unclear if Mbappe will recover in time for that contest at the Santiago Bernabeu, but he's expected to be fit for El Clasico against rivals Barcelona on Oct. 25.
Mbappe, the all-time leading scorer in men's World Cup history with 22 goals, has been in fine form to begin the 2026-27 campaign. He's found the net eight times and provided two assists in eight matches across all competitions for Madrid.
Mbappe is in the running to take home this year's Ballon d'Or, which is being awarded Oct. 26.
