United States forward Christian Pulisic sustained a microfracture and bone bruise in his leg during his team's World Cup loss to Belgium, sources told James Horncastle, Henry Bushnell, and Paul Tenorio of The Athletic.
Pulisic is expected to be sidelined for several weeks.
He had to be substituted in the second half of the United States' eventual 4-1 loss in the round of 16.
Pulisic appeared to suffer the injury when he kicked the leg of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans while attempting a shot in the 52nd minute. He remained in the game briefly, but he was clearly hobbled and was ultimately replaced in the 59th minute.
"I just totally twisted my ankle and my knee in one play," Pulisic told Fox Sports' Jenny Taft postgame.
Medical assessments revealed the microfracture to his tibia/fibula and bone bruise, according to Horncastle, Bushnell, and Tenorio.
The 27-year-old Pulisic dealt with multiple ailments during the World Cup and finished the tournament with one assist.
Pulisic is expected to resume training before his club side, AC Milan, open their new Serie A campaign against Torino on Aug. 23, sources told Ronald Blum of The Associated Press.
Pulisic is entering his fourth season with the Italian team. His contract is due to expire next summer.
