Whatever the outcome of Stephen Curry's extension negotiations with the Golden State Warriors, the 38-year-old said the process won't distract him as he enters his 18th season.
"It's going to happen at the right time, once I have all the information I need to make the decision that is right," Curry told ESPN's Anthony Slater on Wednesday. "The team's been great having that conversation back and forth. If I don't sign, it won't affect me in terms of my play or carrying that weight. But I'll make the decision when I'm ready."
Curry signed a one-year, $62.6-million extension with Golden State in August 2024 that expires after the coming season. Though he's now eligible for another extension worth up to $136.7 million over two years, the two-time MVP and four-time NBA champion has yet to reach an agreement with the organization that drafted him seventh overall in 2009.
"I don't want there to be no drama," Curry said. "No talking points. This team should be competitive and go win."
The two sides have reportedly discussed multiple contract scenarios that could pay Curry what he seeks while the team maintains some financial flexibility. With Jimmy Butler still recovering from his ACL tear after an unusually quiet Warriors offseason, that could provide the franchise with more avenues to retool around Curry next summer.
"This team should have flexibility to make necessary moves if things happen," the 12-time All-Star said. "Those are always just the considerations.
"For me, information and patience is key. It's just a very unique situation all the way around based on where we've been the last four years, where I'm at in my career, what our team looks like this year, and the absolute desperation to win. Trying to balance all that."
