The New York Knicks have temporarily halted ticket sales for the upcoming season because of an error in initial pricing, the team announced Thursday in a statement obtained by The Athletic's Fred Katz.
"We are pausing Knicks individual ticket sales due to a mistake in our pricing. We are rolling back to last year's prices plus an average increase of 12%," said the team's ownership group, Madison Square Garden Sports.
"We will restart sales with new prices shortly, and anyone who already purchased individual tickets will be refunded the difference."
Individual tickets for New York's Opening Night contest on Oct. 20 against the Philadelphia 76ers went on sale Wednesday, with prices exceeding $1,000 for a 400-level seat, according to Knicks reporter Tommy Beer.
"Our intention was never to overcharge our loyal fans, and we thank everyone for their support of the Knicks and their patience as we get things right," the statement added.
Under executive chairman and CEO James Dolan, the Knicks have a policy prohibiting a ticket price increase if the team fails to qualify for the playoffs, per the New York Post's Stefan Bondy. However, prices have risen over the last four seasons, which coincides with the addition of Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and the club reaching the postseason each year, Bondy adds.
The Knicks will raise an NBA championship banner to the Madison Square Garden rafters for the first time since 1973 when they host the new-look 76ers in their season opener.
