Liga MX cancels remainder of Clausura season

Mexico's Liga MX canceled the rest of the 2020 Clausura season on Friday due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Clausura, which makes up the second half of Mexico's soccer season, won't have a champion for 2020. Cruz Azul and Leon will, however, qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League next season.

Concerns were raised after 12 Santos Laguna players tested positive for the coronavirus. Several clubs were open to ending the season, according to ESPN's Tom Marshall.

Liga MX said it will make an announcement in the first week of June regarding a potential return to training.

It's unclear if the Apertura will begin as scheduled in mid-to-late July.

The league was suspended March 15 after 10 rounds of matches.

Mexico has recorded nearly 60,000 coronavirus cases and more than 6,500 related deaths. The country has the second-highest death toll in Latin America after Brazil.
