D-Backs' Carroll placed on IL with wrist fracture
The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Corbin Carroll on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left wrist, they announced Tuesday.
Outfielder Jake McCarthy was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move.
Carroll sustained a "chip fracture," manager Torey Lovullo announced Monday, according to team reporter Jody Jackson. The 2023 All-Star is still awaiting direction regarding his recovery process.
The D-Backs are still seeking multiple medical opinions, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Carroll hasn't played since he was hit by a pitch on the hand last Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Initial tests came back negative before follow-up imaging discovered the fracture.
"It sounds like it's relatively stable so it just needs to heal and we'll see how it is to tolerate after that," general manager Mike Hazen said Monday, according to Piecoro. "I don't know what the downtime is going to be. They'll probably reassess it after a few weeks."
Losing Carroll for an extended period would be a huge blow for the D-Backs. The 24-year-old has 20 homers with 44 RBIs, 10 stolen bases, and a .914 OPS over 72 games this season en route to becoming an NL MVP candidate.
Third baseman Eugenio Suárez (hand contusion) and first baseman Josh Naylor (shoulder discomfort) also exited Monday's 10-0 win against the Chicago White Sox.
"We've taken on a lot, there's no denying that," Lovullo said. "A lot of teams have; I don't want any team to feel sorry for us. But it's our turn to go out there and figure out how to get the job done and that's what my main focus is right now."
Arizona (40-38) sits fourth in the NL West but is just 2.5 games out of a wild-card spot.
