Bregman open to renegotiating contract with Red Sox, agent says
Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is willing to renegotiate his contract, agent Scott Boras told the Boston Globe's Tim Healy.
"I always tell the team - and Alex directs me to tell them - we're always open to any conversation," Boras said. "Any player who plays well somewhere, it's something that's important for the team and important for the player. It's an additive."
Bregman signed a three-year, $120-million pact with the Red Sox as a free agent last offseason following a nine-year run with the Houston Astros. But his contract includes player options after this season and next.
The 31-year-old could be in line for a more lucrative contract if he opts out in the winter, given the start he's had to the 2025 campaign. Bregman is slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 51 games. He's on the injured list with a quad injury but is hoping to return before the All-Star break.
Bregman hit the free-agent market while coming off one of the worst offensive seasons of his career. He hit .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 2024. His 117 OPS+ was the lowest he's ever posted in a season in which he played at least 140 games.
The Red Sox have greater financial flexibility after recently shipping out Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The slugger is owed $254.5 million over the next eight seasons after 2025, and the Giants picked up the entirety of the contract.
