Report: Astros interested in Polanco as Bregman talks continue
The Houston Astros are looking at a contingency plan in case ongoing discussions with free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman don't lead to a signing.
Houston is showing strong interest in veteran infielder Jorge Polanco, sources told The Athletic's Chandler Rome and Ken Rosenthal.
The Astros are considering Polanco, 31, as an option in case Bregman decides to sign elsewhere or if his market drags into spring training, Rome and Rosenthal added.
Five teams remain interested in Bregman, who is no closer to a decision after the Astros reportedly traded right-hander Ryan Pressly to the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Polanco has experience at third base, shortstop, and second base but could also contribute in the outfield, a source told Rome and Rosenthal.
The 11-year MLB veteran appeared in 118 games for the Seattle Mariners last season, slashing .213/.296/.355 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs.
Polanco underwent knee surgery in October, but his agent expects him to be fully recovered by the beginning of the regular season.
