White Sox fans roast team after ballpark name changed to Rate Field

You might still be able to find a rate at the corner of 35th and Shields, but it's no longer a guarantee.

The Chicago White Sox announced a new name for their home stadium Tuesday, rechristening their longtime ballpark as Rate Field in honor of the Chicago-based mortgage company.

The ballpark had been named Guaranteed Rate Field since the company purchased naming rights under a 13-year agreement. Tuesday's renaming brings the stadium's name in line with that of the company, which rebranded in July to Rate while keeping its signature downward-pointing arrow.

The news also came just a few months after the White Sox set a new modern-era record for futility by going 41-121 in 2024. With that record, and last week's trade of ace Garrett Crochet, still top of mind on the South Side, White Sox fans were quick to roast their team over the sudden name change.

Rate Field marks the fourth different name for the White Sox stadium, which opened as a replacement for venerable Comiskey Park in 1991. Originally known as Comiskey Park II, it was rebranded as U.S. Cellular Field in 2003 before Guaranteed Rate bought the rights in 2016.

In January, the White Sox began discussions with developers about constructing a new ballpark in Chicago's South Loop neighborhood. The team's lease at Guaranteed Rate Field expires after the 2029 season.
