Giants fire Zaidi, name Posey new president of baseball ops

The San Francisco Giants parted ways with president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi and named former Giants catcher Buster Posey as his replacement, the team announced Monday.

"We appreciate Farhan's commitment to the organization and his passion for making an impact in our community during his six years with the Giants," team chairman Greg Johnson said in a statement. "Ultimately, the results have not been what we hoped, and while that responsibility is shared by all of us, we decided that a change is necessary."

Posey, 37, will take over the role. He spent his entire 12-year MLB career with the Giants, winning three World Series championships and an MVP award and appearing in seven All-Star Games.

"We are looking for someone who can define, direct, and lead this franchise's baseball philosophy, and we feel that Buster is the perfect fit," Johnson said. "Buster has the demeanor, intelligence, and drive to do this job, and we are confident that he and (manager) Bob Melvin will work together to bring back winning baseball to San Francisco."

Posey reportedly worked closely with Giants third baseman Matt Chapman on the six-year, $151-million extension Chapman signed earlier in September.

Zaidi, 47, had been Giants president of baseball operations since November 2018 after spending time with the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers.

He was responsible for spending close to $250 million in free agency this past offseason. The Giants finished 80-82.

The Giants made a single postseason appearance while Zaidi was in charge, losing in the 2021 NLDS on the heels of a franchise-record 107-win campaign.
