Angels' Washington: 'I'm not worried about me being let go'

The Los Angeles Angels are on pace for their worst season in franchise history, but manager Ron Washington isn't worried about losing his job.

"I'm not worried about me being let go, and I'm not worried about (general manager Perry Minasian) being let go," Washington said, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Sam Blum.

"We're focused on what we have to do - and that's get these young kids better. And we're going to do that."

The Angels own a 28-43 record, good for a .394 winning percentage. The franchise's lowest winning percentage to end a season came in 1980 when it was still known as the California Angels and finished a 160-game campaign at 65-95 (.406).

Injuries to Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, and Brandon Drury mean Washington has had to rely on a roster comprised of mostly young players, including Nolan Schanuel, Logan O'Hoppe, Zach Neto, Jo Adell, and Mickey Moniak.

Angels owner Arte Moreno has a reputation for frequently shifting the franchise's direction. Last season, the club didn't trade Shohei Ohtani and brought in veteran players via trade only to ship them out a short time later to save on salary.

Washington, however, said he's solely focused on developing his young players.

"I'm 72 years old. I'm in my 54th year in the game. I'm not worried about a job," Washington said. "I'm going to do my job and do my job as well as I've always done my job. If it's not good enough, I'll go home.

"Ten years ago, I probably would have had a different attitude. But now, it is what it is. I'm not afraid of building. We're building. And we're getting better."
