Report: Buxton, Twins can't agree on extension
Byron Buxton's tenure with the Minnesota Twins may be nearing its end.
The outfielder and the Twins could not agree on contract extension terms, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Dan Hayes.
The club's offer was for $73 million guaranteed over seven seasons with incentives included that could boost the total value, while Buxton's counter-offer bumped the guaranteed salary to $80 million, Rosenthal and Hayes note.
Rosenthal previously reported Minnesota would likely trade Buxton if the two sides were unable to agree on an extension, meaning the team could deal him by next Friday's trade deadline. However, the Twins could instead move him this offseason since he's not slated to hit free agency until after 2022.
Buxton has been on the injured list since June 22 after being hit by a pitch and breaking his left hand. The injury occurred in just his third game back in the lineup after missing more than a month with a hip strain.
Despite the ailments plaguing Buxton this season - and throughout his career - he appeared to be en route to a true breakout campaign at the plate. The second overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft is hitting .369/.409/.767 with 10 home runs over 27 games in 2021.
