Cardinals-Pirates series postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak
A three-game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates scheduled for Aug. 10-12 has been postponed to allow for additional COVID-19 testing, Major League Baseball announced Sunday.
Outfielder Lane Thomas tested positive for COVID-19 during the Cardinals' latest round of testing, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak said, according to MLB.com's Anne Rogers.
Seventeen members of the Cardinals' traveling party have tested positive for COVID-19.
The Cardinals haven't played since July 29 due to the outbreak. Information regarding the team's resumption of play is expected to be announced later in the week, the league's statement reads.
St. Louis has only played five games this season, while 15 have been postponed. The Cardinals' next series is scheduled to begin Thursday with a doubleheader in Detroit against the Tigers.
To reach 60 games, the Cardinals will need to play 55 contests in 49 days if they restart Thursday.
