Genoa were taken over by Romanian businessman Dan Sucu on Wednesday after he acquired a majority stake in the Serie A club and brought to an end the ownership of controversial investment company 777 Partners.

Sucu, who also owns Rapid Bucharest in his home country, has acquired 77 percent of Genoa for just over 45 million euros ($47.2 million), Genoa said.

777 acquired 99.9 percent of Genoa in September 2021 but were issued with a winding up order by the United Kingdom's High Court earlier this year.

That left question marks over the future of not just Genoa but a host of other clubs, including Sevilla in Spain, Hertha Berlin and storied Brazilian team Vasco da Gama.

Sucu, 61, is the founder of Romania's largest furnishing brand Mobexpert and also has real estate and media assets.

Italy's oldest football club, Genoa had been planning, with local rivals Sampdoria, to purchase the Stadio Luigi Ferraris which is owned by the city of Genoa.

Genoa are managed by France and Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira, who was hired last month following the sacking of Alberto Gilardino and is yet to experience defeat.

Vieira's team are 13th in Serie A but only two points above the relegation zone and host league title contenders Napoli on Saturday.
