Real Madrid and France superstar Kylian Mbappe revealed that he nearly joined Liverpool before his blockbuster move to Paris Saint-Germain from Monaco in 2017.
"I had to take a decision. And yes, I was close to Liverpool," Mbappe told The Athletic's Daniel Taylor. "My mum (Fayza Lamari) was a big fan of Jurgen Klopp, and the favorite destination for my mum was Liverpool. She wanted me to go there."
However, Mbappe wanted to remain in his hometown and continue his development in France.
"I didn't listen because I wanted to play in my city, Paris. I didn't want to leave my country before I was someone," he added. "But yes, my mum was always saying, 'Liverpool - you're going to be there, playing at Anfield; it's going to be insane for you.'"
Mbappe ultimately joined PSG on loan with a mandatory purchase option of €180 million. He played seven seasons in Paris before joining Real Madrid in 2024.
The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the world's best strikers. He became France's all-time leading scorer during the 2026 World Cup and won the Golden Boot in the last two quadrennial tournaments.
