Liverpool could be gearing up to make an official bid on longtime target Timo Werner.

Manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his desire to sign the RB Leipzig star this summer by telling the Liverpool board that the 24-year-old striker would be a perfect fit for his team, reports Fabrizio Romano of the Guardian.

While Liverpool have yet to submit an official offer, the Premier League club has until June 15 to trigger the €60-million (£52.7 million) release clause in Werner's Leipzig contract, which runs until 2023. Liverpool would have to negotiate another fee if they miss the deadline.

Liverpool were considered the odds-on favorites to land Werner before the football season was suspended in March due to the coronavirus outbreak. The pandemic led Liverpool to delay their pursuit of Werner due to the uncertainty over football's return this year.

But with the Premier League set to restart on June 17, the Reds appear to have made Werner a top priority again.

Werner is believed to be keen on a move to Anfield, with the player's representatives reportedly assuring Liverpool that he will wait for a decision from the Merseyside club before deciding whether or not to join another club, Romano reports.

Bayern Munich were also believed to be in the running to sign the German international. But Werner ruled out a move to the reigning Bundesliga champions in order to take on a challenge outside of Germany.

A potential transfer to Inter was also dismissed after the Serie A club's sporting director, Piero Ausilio, revealed that Werner, who joined Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016, is currently not interested in moving to Italy.

After scoring a hat-trick in RB Leipzig's second match since the Bundesliga season restarted earlier in May, Werner now has a career-high 24 league goals.

Werner also played a pivotal role in helping Leipzig advance to the Champions League quarterfinals before the season was suspended.

Meanwhile, Liverpool need just six points to win the Premier League. It would be the club's first top-flight title in 30 years.
