We're talking about a player who's twice led his league in hits, and he would've done it a third time if not for an unfortunately timed knee injury in early September. That setback also potentially robbed him of a 25-homer, 50-double season. Bichette has incredible bat-to-ball skills, is patient enough to take his share of walks, and lowered his strikeout rate by over 5% this past season. Yes, there are legitimate concerns about his defense at shortstop, but his willingness to shift to second base, or potentially third, makes him even more attractive. Bichette played second in the World Series for the first time since 2019 on one good knee and looked like a natural at times. I'm backing up the Brinks truck for Bo. <em>- Sharkey-Gotlieb</em></p><p><strong>Kyle Tucker:</strong> Tucker will likely command the richest contract of the offseason, and he's worth it. Since 2021, the 28-year-old has accrued the 10th-highest fWAR in the majors while making four All-Star appearances and winning two Silver Sluggers, a Gold Glove, and a World Series. He also has only one season with fewer than 136 games played over the last five years, posting 105 stolen bases (18th in the majors) and a 143 wRC+ (10th in the majors) during that time. Tucker struggled in the second half for the Cubs, but that stretch came as he played through a hairline fracture in his hand. -<em> Mcwilliam</em></p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>Kyle Schwarber:</strong> Nobody on the open market can match Schwarber's power. The 2025 NL MVP runner-up has gone deep 187 times since 2022 - a total tied with Shohei Ohtani and trails only Aaron Judge. Schwarber has consistently stayed healthy, logging at least 150 games per season over the last four years, including an MLB-high 162 in 2025. The Phillies signed him to a four-year, $79-million deal the last time he was a free agent. But his strikeout numbers hide a few issues. Chief among them is his struggles with control. The 29-year-old has finished either first or second in his league in walks in four of the last five seasons, and he's hitting free agency after his BB/9 soared to 3.8 this year. And although Cease has six pitches, he's really a two-pitch pitcher, throwing either his four-seam or slider over 80% of the time. Batters caught onto both this year, hitting .228 against those pitches - up from .159 a year ago - while his hard-hit percentage spiked from the 52nd percentile in 2024 to the 72nd in 2025. I'd consider Cease at the right price and in the right ballpark. However, if he's in the wrong environment, I'd worry that an expensive deal could backfire. <em>- Sharkey-Gotlieb</em></p><p><strong>Cody Bellinger:</strong> The 30-year-old received downballot MVP consideration after hitting 29 homers and 98 RBIs in 152 games for the Yankees this past campaign, but some of his underlying metrics are worrisome for a player expected to ink one of the offseason's larger deals. Bellinger ranked in the 36th percentile or lower in chase rate, barrel rate, hard-hit rate, average exit velocity, and bat speed. His expected batting average and expected slugging percentage were also underwhelming, sitting in the 52nd percentile or lower. And while Bellinger provided above-average defense in left field, he didn't play especially well in center, which is concerning for teams eyeing him for a regular role in that spot. - <em>Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Munetaka Murakami:</strong> The slugging corner infielder will get a lot of attention due to his otherworldly power numbers in Japan (246 homers with .557 slugging percentage in 892 games) and age (25). Yet, MLB teams should think twice before giving him a deal in the $150-million range because he's got a swing-and-miss problem that may get even worse in the majors. Murakami posted a 36.7% whiff rate with a 28.6% strikeout rate and struggled immensely against high velocity in 2025. But after finishing at the bottom in 2025, a team that appeared to be on the verge of controlling baseball's toughest division for the next half-decade is suddenly scrambling to stay afloat. Baltimore desperately needs to make a high-profile addition this offseason, whether through trade or free agency - even if it means overpaying. Life in the AL East means spending money to keep up with the Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays, and the Orioles' talented young nucleus deserves support. Settling for the likes of Tomoyuki Sugano and Charlie Morton won't cut it. If Baltimore sits back and allows 2026 to mirror 2025, the club's championship window could slam shut before it ever really opened. <em>- Sharkey-Gotlieb</em></p><p><strong>Blue Jays:</strong> Toronto was inches away from capturing its first World Series in 32 years but couldn't get the job done. While the sting of Miguel Rojas' game-tying homer in the ninth will hurt until spring training, the Blue Jays' front office can provide fans with some relief by winning the offseason. Re-signing Bichette should be the top priority, but adding a shutdown closer and another impact player could be what this club needs to get over the hump. Acquiring Edwin Díaz or Kyle Tucker in addition to Bichette would send a signal to the rest of the league that the Blue Jays aren't satisfied with just reaching the Fall Classic. - <em>Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Phillies:</strong> It feels like Philadelphia's World Series window is on the precipice of closing if the organization doesn't crush its offseason to-do list. Schwarber, Ranger Suárez, and J.T. Realmuto are free agents, while Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Zack Wheeler, and Aaron Nola are all either approaching or in their mid-30s. This team doesn't have a history of spending money. Francisco Liriano's three-year, $39-million deal in 2015 remains Pittsburgh's biggest free-agent contract, and the franchise has never signed a position player to a multi-year deal in free agency. So, any skepticism about owner Bob Nutting actually opening his checkbook is entirely justified. But general manager Ben Cherington has not only hinted that the Pirates will be active this winter - they're expected to have money to spend to get Paul Skenes some help. Who that surprise signing could be and whether it will even work out long term is the bigger question. Given the organization's track record, Pittsburgh will likely have to overpay for any bigger name. Still, what's certain in my mind is that the Pirates want to do something huge to shock the baseball world. <em>- Sharkey-Gotlieb</em></p><p><strong>Los Angeles Angels:</strong> This could be Perry Minasian's last shot to turn around the Angels, so the exec might take a big swing before the final year of his contract is up. The Halos added a new manager in Kurt Suzuki, but it'll take more for L.A. to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014. The Angels need a third baseman, starting pitching, and bullpen upgrades, which would make Alex Bregman, Framber Valdez, and Díaz especially appealing. - <em>Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Miami Marlins:</strong> The Marlins showed their fans that there could be light at the end of the tunnel after going 56-50 to finish 2025. Miami's steady progress throughout the season has reportedly prompted the club's front office to increase payroll. Adding several veterans could bring valuable leadership and stability to the clubhouse, helping mentor a young core. It's easy to forget that he's only two years removed from being a Cy Young finalist <em>and</em> the ace of a pennant winner. And while his 2025 numbers weren't great, Gallen looked a little more like his old self in the second half. He'll probably end up signing a short-term deal to try to rebuild his value, giving a contender with a history of helping pitchers the chance to land a major bargain for 2026. <em>- Sharkey-Gotlieb</em></p><p><strong>Pete Fairbanks:</strong> It's never surprising when the Rays walk away or trade a good player because of salary. In Fairbanks' case, the Rays declined the $11-million option on his contract, making him a free agent. This could make Fairbanks one of the best bargains of the offseason. Since 2020, the hard-throwing right-hander has saved 88 games while posting an 11.2 K/9 and 2.95 FIP. Teams could sign Fairbanks, who's the same age as Díaz, for a much more affordable price. <em>- Mcwilliam</em></p><p><strong>Michael King</strong>: The 30-year-old might have the highest upside out of any starter available on the open market. Multiple injuries, including a nerve issue, limited King to 73 1/3 innings this year, but that opens the door for potential suitors to land the right-hander on a multi-year deal that could prove a bargain. In 2024, he authored a 2.95 ERA with 201 strikeouts over 173 2/3 innings (30 starts), finishing seventh in NL Cy Young voting in his first full year pitching in a rotation. Kings owns a career 3.24 ERA with 10.2 K/9 and doesn't have a lot of mileage on his arm. He has ace potential if he can stay healthy. <em>- Ruminski</em></p>

That was the message first-year head coach Jack Del Rio intended to send the Jacksonville Jaguars when he placed an axe and tree stump in the locker room. Instead, he ended up with a bloodied floor and his punter, Hanson, out for the season; Hanson swung the axe and accidentally hit himself in the leg. -<em><strong> Valente</strong></em></p><h3>David Njoku (2023)</h3><p>Cleveland Browns tight end Njoku suffered burns to his face and arm while trying to light a firepit. Not exactly. The Denver Nuggets forward played in a Christmas Day game and then ended up at the hospital that night after his pet dog bit him. He required surgery, and the Hall of Famer never suited up in an NHL game again. - <strong><em>O'Leary</em></strong></p><h3>Dustin Penner (2012)</h3><p>Again, back spasms aren't out of the ordinary, but getting them while eating your wife's pancakes? Now that's a headline. Penner only missed one game, but the story stuck around much longer. The L.A. Los Angeles Lakers (11-4)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 3</p><p>Luka Doncic could probably keep dropping 40-point displays with relative ease, but he won't have to for much longer. San Antonio Spurs (10-4)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 2</p><p>The Spurs have had tough luck with injuries thus far, and just as De'Aaron Fox returns from a lengthy absence due a hamstring concern, Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle join No. 2 pick Dylan Harper on the sidelines with assorted ailments.</p><h3><a id="CLE" name="CLE"> 8. Cleveland Cavaliers (10-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 9</p><p>Darius Garland is nearly back, which should unlock the Cavs' stuttering offense. In four games since again losing Garland to a toe issue, Cleveland's hitting just 31.9% of its threes. That's been the league's fifth-worst mark in that span.</p><h3><a id="ATL" name="ATL">9. Atlanta Hawks (9-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 17</p><p>Atlanta's won seven of their last 10 without Trae Young in the lineup. Breakout forward Jalen Johnson has picked up much of the slack, with averages of 22.7 points, 10.6 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and 44.1% 3-point shooting during Young's absence.</p><h3><a id="MIL" name="MIL">10. Minnesota Timberwolves (9-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 14</p><p>It's tough to properly assess the Timberwolves when their nine wins came against Portland, Indiana, Charlotte, Brooklyn, Utah (twice), Sacramento (twice), and Dallas. They're one of only two West teams yet to beat an opponent above .500 - and the other's the last-place Pelicans.</p><h3><a id="TOR" name="TOR">13. Toronto Raptors (9-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 20</p><p>The red-hot Raptors have gone 8-1 since an ominous 1-4 start. They're somehow manufacturing enough on-ball opportunities for a ball-dominant and surprisingly unpredictable attacking quartet of Scottie Barnes, Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett, and Immanuel Quickley.</p><h3><a id="PHX" name="PHX">14. Phoenix Suns (8-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 19</p><p>Phoenix's unforeseen early success has partly been fueled by its 3-point shooting. The Suns are fourth in the league with 15.6<strong> </strong>threes made per contest, and veterans Grayson Allen and Royce O'Neale are two of the league's top outside threats.</p><h3><a id="PHI" name="PHI">15. Miami Heat (8-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 15</p><p>Erik Spoelstra's renewed offensive approach that prioritizes urgency and pace is paying off for the Heat. Miami is third in the NBA in points scored (124.6) and second in fast-break points (19.2) thanks to the team's new-look up-tempo offense.</p><h3><a id="CHI" name="CHI">18. Chicago Bulls (7-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 5</p><p>The Bulls have gone 2-6 since a red-hot start, but if Billy Donovan is looking for positives, four<strong> </strong>of their recent losses were on the road, and two were in the absence of first-time All-Star candidate Josh Giddey, who was sidelined with an ankle injury.</p><h3><a id="POR" name="POR">19. Charlotte Hornets (4-10)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 24</p><p>The Hornets have been praised for a savvy draft, but who could have foreseen No. 4 overall selection Kon Knueppel acclimating this quickly? The Duke product leads all rookies in scoring (17.6) and is helping fill Brandon Miller's void.</p><h3><a id="UTA" name="UTA">23. Utah Jazz (5-8)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 27</p><p>Keyonte George's dramatic game-winner against Chicago wasn't just another sign that Utah's supporting young talent is starting to shine. Memphis Grizzlies (4-10)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 22</p><p>Tuomas Iisalo's first full season in charge hasn't gone according to plan. Nelson's off to a slow start with three goals and five points, but with the role he's locked into and the talent around him, it's likely only a matter of time before he's getting on the scoresheet more often.</p><h3>
<a id="WIN" name="WIN"></a>2. Winnipeg Jets (9-4-0)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 10</em></p><p><strong>Alex Iafallo. </strong>Secondary scoring is the Jets' biggest issue, and they could use more than two goals and three assists out of their fifth-highest-paid forward.</p><h3>

Vegas Golden Knights (7-2-3)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 2</em></p><p><strong>Brett Howden. </strong>In the first season of a five-year, $12.5-million contract, Howden has failed to live up to the billing, recording two points in eight games. Usually a reliable two-way player, he's also struggled defensively with a 43.2% expected goals share - third-worst on the team.</p><h3>
<a id="NJD" name="NJD"></a>4. New Jersey Devils (9-4-0)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 9</em></p><p><strong>Ondrej Palat. </strong>Father<strong> </strong>Time comes for us all. Palat, 34, has one assist in 13 contests and is no longer an effective top-nine forward in the NHL. He has two years left at a $6-million cap hit, so the Devils need to figure out a way to maximize what the two-time Cup winner has left.</p><h3>

After being relegated to the fourth line and not registering a point until Game 9, Svechnikov's lack of production threatens to limit the Hurricanes' ceiling unless he steps up as a difference-maker.</p><h3>

Montreal Canadiens (9-3-1)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 14</em></p><p><strong>Sam Montembeault. </strong>The Canadiens are soaring as one of the NHL's most electrifying teams to watch and sit atop the Atlantic, yet Montembeault sports an .855 save percentage. Although Jakub Dobes has been lights out, Montembeault's struggles could undermine the Habs' momentum.</p><h3>
<a id="TBL" name="TBL"></a>7. Tampa Bay Lightning (6-5-2)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 6</em></p><p><strong>Oliver Bjorkstrand. </strong>The Lightning traded two first-round picks to land Bjorkstrand and Yanni Gourde at last year's deadline. Bjorkstrand got hurt and didn't play in the postseason, and he's now in the midst of a 10-game pointless drought.</p><h3>
<a id="UTA" name="UTA"></a>8. Utah Mammoth (9-5-0)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 18</em></p><p><strong>Lawson Crouse. </strong>Utah's top six is humming, but depth scoring would go a long way toward making the Mammoth a legitimate threat. However, Crouse, a three-time 20-goal scorer and the team's fifth-highest-paid forward, has been limited to just four points in 14 games this season.</p><h3>
<a id="DET" name="DET"></a>9. Detroit Red Wings (9-5-0)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 21</em></p><p><strong>John Gibson. </strong>Detroit's prized offseason acquisition has failed to stabilize the club's goaltending, posting an .890 save percentage in eight appearances. While the Red Wings have a playoff-caliber offense, their netminding hasn't been up to snuff yet.</p><h3>

Florida Panthers (6-6-1)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 1</em></p><p><strong>Sam Bennett. </strong>The Conn Smythe winner hasn't stepped up in Aleksander Barkov's absence, which could be moving him closer to the bubble for Team Canada. Bennett has two goals and four points, and he's been outscored 10-3 at five-on-five.</p><h3>

Edmonton Oilers (6-5-4)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 4</em></p><p><strong>Trent Frederic. </strong>Oilers management took a leap of faith when it signed Frederic to an eyebrow-raising eight-year, $30.8-million contract this summer. The deal hasn't paid dividends yet, as Frederic has one goal and no assists in 15 games.</p><h3>

Anaheim Ducks (8-3-1)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 24</em></p><p><strong>Pavel Mintyukov. </strong>The former top-10 pick is in his third season and still waiting to take off in the NHL. Mintyukov's average ice time has decreased each year, and his 41.5% expected goals share at five-on-five highlights his difficulty in making a consistent impact.</p><h3>
<a id="TOR" name="TOR"></a>14. Toronto Maple Leafs (8-5-1)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 8</em></p><p><strong>Auston Matthews. </strong>Twelve points in 14 contests from the second-highest-paid player in the NHL just won't cut it. The production is one thing, but the Maple Leafs are also getting outplayed during Matthews' minutes - that can't happen.</p><h3>

This year, he has one point in seven appearances while getting chances alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.</p><h3>

Washington Capitals (7-5-1)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 12</em></p><p><strong>Alex Ovechkin. </strong>A slight drop-off after his magical 2024-25 campaign was somewhat expected, but the GOAT goal-scorer surely has more in the tank than just the three goals he's produced in 13 games this campaign.</p><h3>
<a id="NYR" name="NYR"></a>17. New York Rangers (6-6-2)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 17</em></p><p><strong>Alexis Lafreniere. </strong>So much for a breakout season under new head coach Mike Sullivan. Lafreniere hasn't found the back of the net since the second game. He's in the first campaign of his seven-year, $52.15-million extension, too.</p><h3>
<a id="CBJ" name="CBJ"></a>18. Columbus Blue Jackets (7-6-0)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 19</em></p><p><strong>Kent Johnson. </strong>The 23-year-old has struggled to follow up his breakout 24-goal, 57-point campaign and has only two goals and four points<strong> </strong>this<strong> </strong>season. He played barely over 12 minutes in Sunday's loss against the Islanders.</p><h3>

Los Angeles Kings (6-4-4)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 11</em></p><p><strong>Phillip Danault. </strong>The veteran pivot's scoring has completely dried up over the past year. Danault tallied 43 points last season but scored only eight goals. This season, he has zero tallies and three assists in 14 contests. Even with his defensive contributions, the Kings need some offense from a player who still averages 16:58 of ice time.</p><h3>

<a id="SEA" name="SEA"></a>21. Seattle Kraken (6-3-4)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 29</em></p><p><strong>Adam Larsson. </strong>The Kraken have been pummelled during Larsson's five-on-five minutes. He holds a dreadful 39.39% expected goals-for share and has been outscored 14-6 through 13 games. Seattle needs stronger play from a key top-four defenseman to truly contend for a playoff spot.</p><h3>
<a id="NYI" name="NYI"></a>22. New York Islanders (6-5-2)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 26</em></p><p><strong>Ilya Sorokin. </strong>What's going on with Sorokin? He finished in the top eight in Vezina Trophy voting each of the last four years but has a .879 save percentage through nine games this season.</p><h3>

Buffalo Sabres (5-4-4)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 25</em></p><p><strong>Owen Power. </strong>With five points in 12 games, the former No. 1 pick still hasn't found his offensive rhythm. More crucially, the Sabres are getting outplayed in Power's minutes, recording a 48.8% expected goals share.</p><h3>

Chicago Blackhawks (6-5-3)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 32</em></p><p><strong>Nick Foligno. </strong>Chicago's captain has the "C" because of his leadership, not production. Still, zero goals in 11 games is a tough start for a player who scored at least 15 in each of the previous two campaigns.</p><h3>

That's not enough for a team starving for offense right now.</p><h3>

Boston Bruins (8-7-0)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 20</em></p><p><strong>Jeremy Swayman. </strong>Boston needed a bounce-back year from its No. 1 goaltender to have any chance of making the playoffs this season, but with an .897 save percentage in nine games, that hasn't happened yet. This is a long-term concern, as Swayman is in the second season of an eight-year, $66-million pact.</p><h3>

Minnesota Wild (5-6-3)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 15</em></p><p><strong>Jared Spurgeon. </strong>The captain has been at the center of a troubling opening month for the Wild. Spurgeon has been outscored 13-4 at five-on-five - the worst mark in the NHL among players with at least 200 minutes at even strength.</p><h3>
<a id="STL" name="STL"></a>29. St. Louis Blues (4-8-2)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 16</em></p><p><strong>Jordan Binnington. </strong>Goaltending, in general, has been horrendous for the Blues. As the No. 1 netminder, it's on Binnington to right the ship. He has an<strong> </strong>.859 save percentage in 10 games this season.</p><h3>

San Jose Sharks (5-6-3)</h3><p><em>Previous rank: 31</em></p><p><strong>John Klingberg. </strong>The Sharks signed the veteran blue-liner to a one-year, $4-million deal in the offseason to provide offense from the back end. The production has been there with five points in eight games, but he owns an abysmal 31.39% expected goals share. </p><h3>

The Frenchman has been a force on both ends, averaging career highs in points (26.7) and rebounds (13.7) plus a league-leading 4.7 blocks.</p><h3><a id="LAL" name="LAL">3. Los Angeles Lakers (6-2)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 11</p><p><strong>Let LeBron sit:</strong> The Lakers are flourishing despite LeBron James' sciatica delaying his season debut. Luka Doncic's otherworldly start helps, but Austin Reaves dropping a 50-piece - and even Jake LaRavia showing out - allows L.A. to keep James fresh in Year 23.</p><h3><a id="PHI" name="PHI">4. Philadelphia 76ers (5-2)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 20</p><p><strong>Embiid's no longer the centerpiece:</strong> The electric backcourt of Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe has been a revelation as Joel Embiid had his worst-ever four-game start to a season. Change isn't easy, but Embiid and the 76ers will be better off practicing acceptance.</p><h3><a id="CHI" name="CHI">5. The Montenegrin big is posting the best field-goal (58.4%), 3-point (48.4%), and effective field-goal percentages (66.9%) of his 15-year NBA tenure for the surprisingly good Bulls.</p><h3><a id="DEN" name="DEN">6. Denver Nuggets (4-2)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 2</p><p><strong>Johnson doesn't fit:</strong> An adjustment period was expected, but Cam Johnson has struggled immensely in Denver. The Nuggets' offensive rating is 10.4 points better when he's not on the floor, a swing that doesn't currently seem worth the minor positive impact on defense.</p><h3><a id="HOU" name="HOU">7. Houston Rockets (4-2)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 5</p><p><strong>Don't sacrifice the youth:</strong> After the Rockets acquired Kevin Durant, some speculated that Houston should trade a rising name, like Alperen Sengun or Jabari Smith Jr., to add another vet. Both are now having career years and already seem like perfect complements to Durant.</p><h3><a id="MIL" name="MIL">8. Milwaukee Bucks (5-3)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 18</p><p><strong>Rollins is the truth:</strong> Kevin Porter Jr.'s injury has given Ryan Rollins an opportunity to start at the point. The former second-round pick is making a strong case to keep his new gig, averaging 16.3 points, 5.6 assists, and 1.9 steals.</p><h3><a id="CLE" name="CLE">9. Cleveland Cavaliers (4-3)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 4</p><p><strong>Cavs' offense stinks:</strong> The Cavaliers boasted the league's best offensive rating (121.0) last season. That's dropped to the fifth-worst mark (111.3) this year. Injuries to Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Max Strus have placed too great a burden on Donovan Mitchell.</p><h3><a id="GSW" name="GSW">10. Detroit Pistons (5-2)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 14</p><p><strong>Detroit can win the East:</strong> The Pistons aren't getting enough love for their winning basketball, which, in fairness, was nonexistent for years before the team cracked .500 last season. Jalen Duren's breakout has transformed them into a paint juggernaut, and Jaden Ivey's return should fix its 3-point shooting.</p><h3><a id="NYK" name="NYK">12. New York Knicks (4-3)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 3</p><p><strong>Knicks' second unit needs boost:</strong> New York may need to start looking for reinforcements, as its reserves rank 28th in scoring. Josh Hart is playing through a nerve issue in his hand, while Jordan Clarkson has yet to find his rhythm in the Big Apple.</p><h3><a id="POR" name="POR">13. Portland Trail Blazers (4-3)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 25</p><p><strong>Blazers play better without Billups: </strong>Is Portland a more competitive team in Chauncey Billups' absence? You bet. The group appears fiery under Tiago Splitter, leading the league in steals (12.1) while owning the ninth-best defensive rating (111.7).</p><h3><a id="MIN" name="MIN">14. Minnesota Timberwolves (4-3)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 6</p><p><strong>Randle is worth every penny:</strong> The Timberwolves have to be pleased with their initial return on Julius Randle's three-year, $100-million contract. He's providing elite 3-point shooting at the four and has elevated his game in the absence of Anthony Edwards.</p><h3><a id="MIA" name="MIA">15. Los Angeles Clippers (3-4)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 9</p><p><strong>Dunn should start:</strong> The Clippers are struggling defensively after boasting a No. 3 ranking last season. Bradley Beal and Bogdan Bogdanovic aren't playing well enough to justify leaving Kris Dunn's defense out of the team's starting five.</p><h3><a id="ATL" name="ATL">17. Atlanta Hawks (4-4)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 10</p><p><strong>Hawks are threadbare without Trae:</strong> Atlanta is evidently experiencing issues in Trae Young's absence. Nickeil Alexander-Walker's insertion into the starting five highlights how bad a bench anchored by Onyeka Okongwu, Luke Kennard, and Mouhamed Gueye can be.</p><h3><a id="ORL" name="ORL">18. Orlando Magic (3-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 7</p><p><strong>Magic are inept from deep:</strong> A season removed from finishing dead last in 3-pointers made (11.2) and 3-point percentage (31.8%), Orlando is 28th in triples per game (10.4). Desmond Bane was supposed to help correct the issue, but he's shooting a career-worst 28.6% from downtown.</p><h3><a id="PHX" name="PHX">19. Phoenix Suns (3-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 23</p><p><strong>Gillespie's the answer at point:</strong> Phoenix should start Collin Gillespie - who's been a pleasant surprise - at point guard and move Devin Booker back to his true position. Not only is Gillespie second in assists, the Suns are <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/team/1610612756/onoffcourt-summary?dir=D&amp;sort=DIFF_NET_RATING#:~:text=%2D5.9-,8.9,-ALLEN%2C%20GRAYSON">remarkably better</a> when he's on the floor.</p><h3><a id="TOR" name="TOR">20. Boston Celtics (3-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 17</p><p><strong>Cut back the threes, Joe:</strong> The Celtics attempt the most threes per game (47.8) but convert an abysmal 31.2% of them - the league's second-worst mark. This MacGyvered roster simply can't maintain Joe Mazzulla's 3-point-heavy style. Time to tweak the playbook.</p><h3><a id="MEM" name="MEM">22. Memphis Grizzlies (3-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 15</p><p><strong>Morant era is over:</strong> Tuomas Iisalo reportedly challenged Ja Morant's leadership and effort after a recent loss, prompting a dismissive response from the All-Star guard and an ensuing one-game suspension. Morant staying put much longer is hard to envision if he's already on rocky terms with Iisalo.</p><h3><a id="CHA" name="CHA">23. Charlotte Hornets (3-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 27</p><p><strong>Kalkbrenner is steal of 2025 draft:</strong> Ryan Kalkbrenner has made an instant impact at the five with his shot-blocking, offensive rebounding, and finishing around the basket. The Creighton product leads all players with an 82.9% field-goal percentage.</p><h3><a id="DAL" name="DAL">24. Dallas Mavericks (2-5)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 13</p><p><strong>Offseason hype has vanished:</strong> A combination of injuries to Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively, Klay Thompson's swift decline, and the team's league-worst offensive rebound percentage (23.5) and offensive rating (104.2) could spell doom in Dallas.</p><h3><a id="SAC" name="SAC">25. Indiana Pacers (1-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 19</p><p><strong>Pacers may trade Siakam: </strong>Unless Pascal Siakam or basically all of their depth pieces are traded, the Pacers risk paying the luxury tax for the first time since 2005-06. Would his exit make the team better? Of course not. Is owner Herb Simon notoriously cheap? Yes.</p><h3><a id="UTA" name="UTA">27. Utah Jazz (3-4)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 30</p><p><strong>Markkanen is All-NBA worthy:</strong> Lauri Markkanen is off to a scorching start following an injury-riddled campaign, averaging a career-high 33 points on 48.9<strong>%</strong> shooting. His 51-point performance against the Suns was the first 50-point game by a Jazz player in 27 years.</p><h3><a id="WAS" name="WAS">28. Washington Wizards (1-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 28</p><p><strong>George is a star:</strong> Kyshawn George has shined as a primary playmaker. The forward leads the team in points (18.3), assists (4.5), and 3-point percentage (54.5%), not to mention he's averaging 7.8 boards. Meanwhile, CJ McCollum and his horrendous 37.2% field-goal percentage should be dealt, ASAP.</p><h3><a id="BKN" name="BKN">29. Brooklyn Nets (0-7)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 29</p><p><strong>Nets whiffed on all their picks:</strong> None of Brooklyn's five first-round selections appear ready, but its three rookie point guards look especially uncomfortable playing at this level. Ben Saraf is the Nets' assists leader at just 3.2 per game, which explains a lot.</p><h3><a id="NOP" name="NOP">30. New Orleans Pelicans (1-6)</a></h3><p><em>Previous:</em> 24</p><p><strong>Green's time is up:</strong> The Pelicans' 1-6 start should be the final nail in the coffin for Willie Green. New Orleans can't afford further slippage with its 2026 first-round pick likely heading to the Hawks as part of the misguided Derik Queen draft-day trade.</p>

Denver Nuggets</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +650</p><p>Denver has the ingredients for another title run. Jonas Valanciunas gives the Nuggets a dependable backup center, while Cameron Johnson and Tim Hardaway Jr. provide some much-needed floor spacing. Bruce Brown's also back for another stint and should be an asset on both ends.</p><h3><a id="NYK" name="NYK">3. New York Knicks</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +1000</p><p>A season ago, the Knicks' starting lineup played 940 minutes together - 226 more than any other lineup in the league. They've helped address the issue by bolstering the bench with free-agent acquisitions Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele.</p><h3><a id="CLE" name="CLE">4. Cleveland Cavaliers</a></h3><p><em>Title odds: </em>+650</p><p>De'Andre Hunter's expected shift to the starting five may be the subtle tweak that finally returns the Cavs to the conference finals after a disappointing 2025 postseason. Once his foot heals from surgery, Max Strus should also be a better fit on an overhauled second unit.</p><h3><a id="HOU" name="HOU">5. Minnesota Timberwolves</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +1800</p><p>Minnesota's banking on sophomores Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon Jr. to fill the bench void left by Nickeil Alexander-Walker's exit. If they're ready, the Timberwolves will have a surprisingly deep rotation that can alleviate the scoring pressure on Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle.</p><h3><a id="ORL" name="ORL">7. Orlando Magic</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +1800</p><p>It came at a hefty cost, but the Magic hope that Desmond Bane's arrival is the missing piece of the puzzle. With an emerging core led by Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero, Orlando is looking to upset the power balance in the East.</p><h3><a id="GSW" name="GSW">8. Golden State Warriors</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +2200</p><p>The Warriors aren't wasting any of Stephen Curry's final seasons. Though both are undersized, 39-year-old Al Horford might be Draymond Green's best frontcourt partner in years. Jonathan Kuminga's short-term deal also gives Golden State a potential trade chip come February.</p><h3><a id="LAC" name="LAC">9. Los Angeles Clippers</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +1600</p><p>The Kawhi Leonard saga overshadowed a productive offseason. The Clippers added athleticism with the acquisition of John Collins, brought in Bradley Beal on a low-risk deal, and solidified their depth with the signings of Chris Paul and Brook Lopez.</p><h3><a id="ATL" name="ATL">10. Los Angeles Lakers</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +1500</p><p>Luka Doncic is looking chiseled and LeBron James is still LeBron James (despite the troublesome sciatica issue), though the Lakers are short on reliable role players. Could Deandre Ayton be a difference-maker? Chances of that are slimmer than Doncic.</p><h3><a id="SAS" name="SAS">12. San Antonio Spurs</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +5000</p><p>Victor Wembanyama's conspicuous preseason confidence should put the rest of the NBA on notice. If No. 2 pick Dylan Harper acclimates quickly alongside De'Aaron Fox and Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, the playoffs are a realistic goal for Mitch Johnson's youngsters.</p><h3><a id="DAL" name="DAL">13. Dallas Mavericks</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +3300</p><p>Dallas locked up P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford to solidify the frontcourt around Anthony Davis and No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg. Meanwhile, D'Angelo Russell is a solid stopgap option at the point with Kyrie Irving recovering from an ACL tear.</p><h3><a id="DET" name="DET">14. Detroit Pistons</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +4000</p><p>Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson not only give the Pistons some needed floor spacing, but the vets will help Cade Cunningham build upon his sensational 2024-25 season. Jaden Ivey's minor knee setback shouldn't keep Detroit from shaking up the East.</p><h3><a id="MEM" name="MEM">15. Nikola Jovic was rewarded with an extension and is poised for a breakout year starting alongside Bam Adebayo in the frontcourt.</p><h3><a id="BOS" name="BOS">17. Boston Celtics</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +3000</p><p>Jaylen Brown's preseason hamstring scare was a stark reminder of just how tenuous and threadbare this Celtics roster is. Even if Jayson Tatum's recovery from an Achilles tear is miraculous, it may not be enough to save what feels doomed to be a gap year in Boston.</p><h3><a id="MIL" name="MIL">18. Milwaukee Bucks</a></h3><p><em>Title odds: </em>+6000</p><p>Under no circumstances do Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma, and Kevin Porter Jr. make for a more dependable supporting cast than Brook Lopez, Khris Middleton, Damian Lillard, and Pat Connaughton, though the Bucks' missing link, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, has returned from a one-season sojourn. Phoenix Suns</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +50000</p><p>Kevin Durant, general manager James Jones, and head coach Mike Budenholzer were the key departures amid an offseason of wholesale changes for a Suns franchise that admitted it needed a massive reset after prior malpractice. New Orleans Pelicans</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em> +50000</p><p>Dejounte Murray's likely out through December, yet New Orleans relinquished its 2026 first-rounder to trade up for Derik Queen. Washington Wizards</a></h3><p><em>Title odds:</em><em> </em>+100000</p><p>Washington should improve upon last season's 18-win mark with veterans CJ McCollum and Khris Middleton in the starting five.
