</table></div></figure><p>It's another incredible start for McLaren. The team began the season with Norris finishing over 48 seconds behind Verstappen in Bahrain. So, how did McLaren and Norris get here?</p><p>Of course, McLaren's Miami upgrade package unlocked a new ceiling for the car. In the races since, it's been no worse than slightly below the Red Bull and as good as the car of the field. But in Zandvoort, the McLaren looked like it had taken another massive step, which might be thanks to another huge performance package and a Red Bull slip-up.</p><p>McLaren brought four performance upgrades, with changes to its front brake scoop, front suspension, rear suspension, and floor edge. It also brought circuit-specific updates to the rear and beam wings. The result was a massacre.</p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

Ultimately, the risk didn't just turn into a reward; it may have flipped the championship on its head. Verstappen's natural ability, the team's savvy strategy, and McLaren's execution errors hid RB20's recent weaknesses. But there was nowhere to hide in Zandvoort.</p><p>The warning signs were there before Norris took the checkered flag 22.8 seconds ahead of Verstappen. Previous advantages like tire preservation seemingly evaporated overnight after what started as issues with bumps and curbs. Red Bull admitted in Zandvoort that it might have gone down the wrong development path, which in Formula 1 is signaling blood in the water to the likes of McLaren.</p><p>Verstappen <a href="https://x.com/ErikvHaren/status/1827382873814384666">reportedly</a> drove with an old floor specification this weekend. As McLaren brings upgrades to continue progressing, Red Bull is going backward to figure out where it went wrong.</p><p>The Dutch national anthem has been put on pause until Red Bull finds answers to its RB20 problems and develops solutions to fix those issues. A disappointing qualification had Leclerc starting sixth for the Grand Prix and teammate Carlos Sainz starting 11th. The Monegasque driver wasn't quiet about his frustrations, saying it would take a "miracle" to be on the podium in Zandvoort. At lights out, Leclerc proved that his sheer skill, not a miracle, would put him on the podium. He jumped ahead of Perez immediately off the spot and undercut George Russell and Oscar Piastri to move into third. Leclerc also held off Piastri's lightning-fast McLaren for the last 30 laps under constant pressure. The car's been phenomenal almost since Miami. I wouldn't say we've been the best since Miami, but on average, we have been. It's clear that we missed out on opportunities where we should have beat him and we didn't. That's in the past, and that's out of my control for now - we've reviewed those things. We've tried to take a step forward in a lot of areas, and a result like today proves that."</p><p><strong>Red Bull's Christian Horner on McLaren's dominant weekend:</strong> "We did everything we could, but you could see their pace was just in a different league - plenty of work to do. I think we learned a lot of lessons this weekend, which will be valuable. A solid drive from Checo. Time to digest what's happened here, damage limitation with P2, and time to bounce back in Monza. ... The pace that they had today, nothing's secure (in the standings). We've got a comfortable lead in the drivers' championship, but the constructors' is another chunk of points that has come off today. We're going to have to respond."</p><p><strong>Leclerc on podium finish:</strong> "Very, very surprised. I'm not very often happy with a P3, but I think with today's race, we can be extremely happy with the job we've done. On a very difficult weekend for the team, we've been struggling Friday until the race. In the race, we found more pace, executed the perfect strategy, we undercut two of our competitors, and we managed to keep them behind. A really strong race for the team. Really happy to start the second half like this."</p><p><strong>George Russell on Mercedes finishing 7th and 8th:</strong> "Strange how we can win three of the last four and be fighting in Montreal and all of these places and then suddenly finish 50 seconds behind the win today. We need to look into it. That's bad news for Red Bull and Max Verstappen, who have seen their dominance turn into frustration with the RB20.</p><p>Verstappen has won just two of the last seven races after winning five of the first seven. If McLaren polishes up its strategy department, would it really be a surprise if the Dutch national anthem is barely heard again? The Scuderia have regressed and are positioned in no man's land as the fourth-fastest team, but don't count the Italian side out yet. While Ferrari struggles mightily on tracks with high-speed corners, there are also a number of races coming up where a resurgence is possible.</p><p>Monza - a track that favors engine power and straight-line speed - could bring some home-race optimism. Baku and Singapore have historically been strong circuits for Ferrari, and Charles Leclerc was in serious contention to win on the streets of Las Vegas last year. Perez has seen success at Monza, Baku, and Singapore, three of the next four races. But what if his struggles continue? There's a one-month gap between the Singapore Grand Prix on Sept. 22 and the US Grand Prix on Oct. 20. If Perez can't regain his form, perhaps Red Bull inserts Liam Lawson in during that time off to finish the year. After all, Helmut Marko said we'd have a clear idea of Lawson's future come September.</p><p>That's probably Lawson's easiest path to an F1 seat, but an insertion into RB to replace Daniel Ricciardo is another option. The senior team could pull the plug early if Ricciardo isn't deemed Red Bull-worthy yet. Since 1990, the most variation in a season for Grand Prix wins was eight, achieved in 2003 and 2012. With seven different drivers already winning a race and the RB20 faltering, the "best of the rest" have an opportunity to tie the record.</p><p>While Aston Martin hasn't produced as many points as it would have liked since Canada, Fernando Alonso is a former world champion for a reason. Nico Hulkenberg has been showing some promise and could <em>finally </em>get his maiden win with a little help. With Red Bull's stalled development and Perez's struggling form, it's looking more likely that McLaren will win the constructors' championship for the first time since 1998 - before both of its first-team drivers were born.</p><p>Maiden wins from Norris in Miami and Piastri in Hungary show that the team is at the top of its game. Norris' 199 points are only six short of his season total from 2023, and Piastri has long surpassed his rookie points total. That finish might not seem likely right now considering Verstappen holds a 78-point lead over Norris in second place, and the McLaren driver has dropped 25 points from the leader since Imola onwards. Still, Norris has a good chance at making a run for the drivers' championship.</p><p>With Red Bull on a downward trajectory and McLaren the car to beat, it won't be surprising if Norris gets it together after the summer break and consistently finishes ahead of Verstappen. Remember, one DNF is all it takes to tighten up this title fight. Decreasing the deficit to 60 points will keep the championship fight alive in Qatar, but with even more optimistic thinking, maybe another Abu Dhabi decider isn't crazy, either.</p>

<p>Canada's Brandie Wilkerson and Melissa Humana-Paredes settled for the silver in beach volleyball after being defeated by Brazil in the decisive third set.</p><p>Their effort is Canada's best-ever beach volleyball result, and its first medal in the women's competition. It also ties the Canadian national record for most total medals won at a non-boycotted Summer Olympics with 24.</p><p>Brazil's Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Eduarda Santos Lisboa took a back-and-forth first set 26-24. The Canadians rallied back to take the second set 21-12 but lost the tiebreaker set 15-10. It was the first time in Olympic history that a beach volleyball gold-medal game was taken to a third set.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>This is Canada's second-ever beach volleyball medal. The first was a bronze won by John Child and Mark Heese at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics - the year the sport was introduced. Humana-Paredes is the daughter of Hernan Humana, who coached Child and Heese.</p><p>Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes were members of Canada's beach volleyball team in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but they had different partners. Both lost their respective quarterfinals and decided to join forces in October 2022.</p><p>The duo finished Paris' round robin 1-2 and were forced to play a "lucky loser" match against Czechia. It's the first time in the sport's Olympic history that the winners of the lucky loser match have made the final.</p><p>Switzerland's Tanja Hueberli and Nina Brunner won bronze after defeating Australia's Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy in straight sets.</p>

<p>Andre De Grasse anchored the Canadian men to a gold medal in the 4x100m relay Friday, upsetting the Americans in Paris and helping his country win the event for the first time since 1996.</p><p>The Americans were disqualified postrace after Kenneth Bednarek and Christian Coleman had a bad handoff at the first exchange and stepped outside the legal zone.</p><p>The Canadian team, consisting of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney, and De Grasse, grabbed the last spot in qualification and were situated in lane nine. De Grasse made up ground in the final leg and held off the South Africans to win gold and set a season's best time.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>South Africa took home the silver, with Great Britain earning bronze. The Canadian team was unchanged from the one that won silver in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. De Grasse, Rodney, and Brown also won bronze in the event at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.</p><p>The win was redemption for De Grasse after the Canadian flag bearer didn't qualify for the 100m and 200m finals. It was the first time in De Grasse's Olympic career that he didn't medal in an event he competed in.</p><p>De Grasse is now tied with swimmer Penny Oleksiak as the most decorated Canadian Olympian, with seven medals across three Games.</p>

It's also the second time in two days that Tebogo beat Lyles, as the Boswanan topped the American in the event's semifinal.</p><p>Lyles, the 100m champion in Paris, settled for bronze, while Bednarek matched the silver he earned in the event at 2020 Tokyo. Lyles received a yellow card for improper conduct post-race after making a high-energy entrance into the stadium. A second yellow card would've resulted in an automatic disqualification from the event.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Lyles required medical attention after the race and left the track area in a wheelchair. NBC reported Thursday during its Olympic broadcast that Lyles tested positive for COVID on Tuesday. It's the first time a Canadian beach volleyball team has made an Olympic final.</p><p>Wilkerson and Humana-Paredes dropped the first set 21-14 before storming back to win the second set 22-20 and the tiebreaker set 15-12. It was the first loss of the Games for the Swiss pair and the first time in the event that they didn't win in straight sets.</p><p>Canada is guaranteed to take home its second-ever beach volleyball medal. <p>Defending 200m Olympic champion Andre De Grasse fell short of the 200m final at the Paris Games after coming third in his semifinal heat Wednesday. American Noah Lyles, who won Sunday's 100m race, qualified third.</p><p>De Grasse's semifinal loss follows the Canadian flag bearer's failure to qualify for the 100m final and the Canadian Olympic Committee's decision to revoke the credentials of his coach, Rana Reider, between the two events, citing "new information about the appropriateness of Mr. Reider remaining accredited."</p><p>The Paris iterations of the 100m and 200m races mark the first Olympic events De Grasse has competed in without medaling. De Grasse attributed his disappointing performances to an injury he reaggravated in July.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I thought I was pretty much healthy coming into the Games, but I kinda picked it up a little bit in the 100 meters, and I felt the effects the next day," De Grasse said to CBC's Devin Heroux. "The pain was too much, so I didn't even push. I knew it would be tough to make the finals after that."</p><p>De Grasse added that his injury should not affect his 4x100m relay team, as it "doesn't hurt as much on the straights."</p><p>Lyles' time of 20.08 seconds put him second in his semifinal and third overall. He joins fellow Americans Kenneth Bednarek, who qualified second overall, and Erriyon Knighton, who qualified fifth. Lyles is the reigning world champion in the 200m.</p><p>The 200m final is set for 8:30 p.m. Paris time Thursday. The heats for the 4x100m relay begin Thursday morning.</p>

Reigning vault gold medalist, Brazil's Rebeca Andrade, took home the silver, while Biles' teammate, Jade Carey, earned bronze.</p><p>Biles executed her signature vault, a Yurchenko double pike, to near perfection, scoring an impressive 15.7 with an execution score of 9.4 out of 10. Biles finished the night with a score of 15.3, almost four-tenths of a point more than Andrade, after earning a 14.9 on her second vault, a Cheng.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The Yurchenko double pike, also known as the Biles II, is one of the most difficult vaults possible - it was eight-tenths harder than the next most difficult vault executed in the final. If not completed correctly, there's a high likelihood that the gymnast lands on their head or neck. Biles is one of the few female gymnasts to successfully execute it in a world or Olympic competition.</p><p>This is Biles' third medal of the Paris Games. She will compete in the balance beam and floor finals Monday morning.</p>

<p>Summer McIntosh won her second gold medal of the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 200m butterfly Thursday for Canada's third gold overall.</p><p>McIntosh earned her third medal in Paris after capturing gold in the 400m individual medley and silver in the 400m freestyle. This is Canada's first medal ever in the 200m butterfly.</p><p>The 17-year-old phenom is the first Canadian swimmer since Alex Baumann at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to win two gold medals in the pool at the same Games. She's the first Canadian woman to achieve the feat.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>McIntosh's mother, Jill Horstead, competed in the same 200m butterfly at the aforementioned Summer Games in 1984.</p><p>"I know she's unbelievably proud of me," McIntosh told <a href="https://x.com/CBCOlympics/status/1819095230064320532">Devin Heroux of CBC</a> after her victory. "After I touched the wall I looked for her and the rest of my family. And to see my sister and my dad there as well is very special."</p><p>McIntosh set an Olympic record with a time of 2 minutes, 3.03 seconds Thursday, eclipsing the mark that China's Zhang Yufei set in Tokyo three years ago. The Chinese swimmer jumped out to an early lead at Paris La Defense Arena but faded down the stretch and ultimately claimed bronze.</p><p>Regan Smith of the United States took home the silver.</p><p>McIntosh bided her time before making her move halfway through the race and pulling away to land on the top step of the podium once more.</p><p>Just over an hour after her win, McIntosh was back in the pool for the women's 4x200m freestyle relay. The Canadians ended the relay in fourth.</p><p>The Toronto native will finish her Olympics in the 200m individual medley, which begins Friday.</p>

American Sunisa Lee rounded out the podium in third.</p><p>Biles continues her 11-year unbeaten streak in all-around meets where she's competed. The 27-year-old is the oldest all-around champion in more than 70 years, and her sixth gold medal makes Biles the fifth-most-decorated Olympic gymnast of all time.</p><p>"It is crazy I am in the conversation of the greatest of all time. I just think I'm still Simone Biles from Spring, Texas, who loves to flip," Biles said, according to <a href="https://x.com/nrarmour/status/1819091031243227511">Nancy Armour of USA Today</a>.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>This is the first time two Olympic all-around champions - Biles and Lee - have competed against each other in an Olympic all-around final. Biles is the first American gymnast and the first gymnast in more than 55 years to win two all-around titles. Biles is also the first gymnast, male or female, to win the title eight years after her first.</p><p>Andrade gave Biles a run for her money. A wobble from Biles on the uneven bars in the second rotation - her weakest apparatus - put Tokyo's all-around silver medalist in the lead and dropped Biles to third.</p><p>Biles kept her composure and fought back in the subsequent rotations, earning the highest scores in the beam and floor, catapulting her to first and finishing the meet more than a point ahead of Andrade. All three podium finishers in Paris are now two-time Olympic all-around medalists, the first time that's happened in the sport's history.</p><p>Biles' title comes three years after withdrawing in Tokyo with an infamous case of "the twisties." Her win extends the streak of American athletes winning the all-around final to six straight Olympics.</p><p>Biles and Andrades' next event comes Saturday with the vault final. Lee will compete in the bars final on Sunday.</p>
