Chandler on future with Knicks: Won't 'waste another season' if team aims for 2015

It was a bad, bad season for the New York Knicks, and there's a chance things get a lot worse before they get better.

With reports surfacing that the Knicks are aiming for flexibility in the summer of 2015, when cap space could be leveraged to put a strong supporting cast from a deep free agent class around Carmelo Anthony, it seems as if 2014-15 may be another down year for the franchise.

If they are, in fact, looking ahead to 2015, count Tyson Chandler out. As he told the New York Post:

I definitely don’t want to waste another season. I don’t want to waste this season. I’m not into wasting seasons. Your time is too short in this league and I want to win a championship, another one. I’m not into wasting seasons.
...
I’ll cross that bridge when it gets to that point. I hope it’s not that situation.
That decision isn’t going to be in my hands.

Chandler will earn $14.6 million next season and will then be an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2015. The Knicks may not be willing to move Chandler since his large salary coming off the books opens up space in 2015, though they may be inclined to deal him if an acquiring team doesn't need to send out future salary commitments.

What the market would be for a 31-year-old center who noticeably declined this year is unclear. While Chandler has a track record as one of the best defensive centers in the NBA, he didn't move the needle much for the Knicks this year.
