Both countries scored two goals in less than three minutes in the second period. Minnesota Frost star Taylor Heise put the U.S. ahead in the third period with a 5-on-3 goal. The opportunity arose after Laura Stacey was penalized for charging American netminder Aerin Frankel. Gwyneth Philips replaced Frankel for the remainder of the contest after the collision.
Sarah Fillier forced overtime with an equalizer with five minutes left in regulation.
Canada outshot the U.S. 10-7 in overtime but lost to its biggest rivals for the second time in the tournament. The United States won the preliminary round meeting 2-1 on April 13.
USA and Canada have met in the gold-medal game of the tourney in all but one year since 1990. Five of the past seven title games between the two countries have been decided in overtime.
