Jack Hughes looking to retrieve golden goal puck from HOF
New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes says he's going to ask the Hockey Hall of Fame for the puck from his overtime game-winning goal that secured Team USA the gold medal at the Milan Cortina Olympics in February.
"I'm trying to get it. Like, that's bullshit that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion. Why would they have that puck?" Hughes told ESPN's Greg Wyshynski on Tuesday.
Hughes had admitted he was unaware that the puck wasn't in his possession until an interview a few days after the gold-medal game.
However, a representative from the IIHF eased growing concerns about the puck's location soon after, clarifying that it had been secured and "designated for archival preservation with the HHOF to ensure its long-term safekeeping and historical recognition."
The golden goal puck from Team USA's win over Canada is currently being showcased at the HHOF in Toronto. The puck from Meghan Keller's overtime goal that clinched gold for the U.S. women's hockey team over Canada is also among the mementos in the "Olympics '26" display.
"These donated items represent defining moments on the world's biggest stage and carry powerful stories of national pride and hockey history at its highest level," Jamie Dinsmore, president and CEO of the Hockey Hall of Fame, said.
If he manages to get the puck back, Hughes said he would likely give the piece of history to his father, Jim, who acts as the family archivist for himself and his brothers, Quinn Hughes and Luke Hughes.
"I wouldn't even want it for myself. I'd want it for my dad. I know he'd just love, love having it," Hughes said.
