The New York Islanders aren't renewing the contract of president of hockey operations and general manager Lou Lamoriello, the team announced Tuesday.

Lamoriello joined New York's front office in 2018. The club will begin a search for their next GM immediately.

"The Islanders extend a heartfelt thank you to Lou Lamoriello for his extraordinary commitment over the past seven years," the team said in a statement. "His dedication to the team is in line with his Hall of Fame career."

The Islanders reached the Eastern Conference Final twice with Lamoriello in charge, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021. However, New York hasn't won a series since and missed the playoffs this season.

Some of Lamoriello's biggest transactions with the Islanders include trading Devon Toews to the Colorado Avalanche, acquiring Bo Horvat from the Vancouver Canucks, and signing goaltender Ilya Sorokin to an eight-year, $66-million extension in 2023.

Lamoriello, 82, was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. He had a three-year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs before joining the Islanders but is most known for overseeing the most successful era in New Jersey Devils history. He ran the club from 1987-2015, as the Devils qualified for the playoffs 21 times and won three Stanley Cups.
