Roy: I don't have proof, but Isles 'playing good hockey'

Patrick Roy has a hunch that his New York Islanders are doing just fine, even if he doesn't have the evidence to back it up.

The Isles head coach explained his rationale following a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

The Islanders are 14-18-7 and sit in the basement of the Metropolitan Division (eighth place) following Thursday's defeat. Their minus-21 goal differential puts them near the bottom of the league.

New York has lost three straight games and has won only three of its last 10. The club is mustering only 2.59 goals per contest and allowing 3.15.

The Islanders have both the worst power play and penalty kill in the NHL. They've converted only 11% of their chances with the man advantage and avoided a goal on just 63.5% of opposing power-play opportunities.

Their five-on-five play has been better, but it's still mediocre. They're controlling 50.28% of the expected goals and 49.26% of the scoring chances in those situations, according to Natural Stat Trick.

The Islanders lost twice to the Maple Leafs in a span of three days. Toronto beat New York 3-1 on Tuesday. The Isles are now off until Sunday when they'll visit the Boston Bruins.
