Flames sign Barrie to 1-year, $1.25M deal

The Calgary Flames inked defenseman Tyson Barrie to a one-year, $1.25-million contract, the team announced Thursday.

Barrie had been with the Flames on a professional tryout.

The 13-year NHL veteran has made a strong impression during the preseason, recording three assists in four exhibition games. He's bounced around on the Flames' defense but has spent most of his time alongside 6-foot-6 newcomer Kevin Bahl.

Barrie gives the Flames added depth on the right side of the blue line. MacKenzie Weegar, Rasmus Andersson, Daniil Miromanov, Brayden Pachal, and Barrie all shoot right, though Weegar typically plays the left side. Barrie and Pachal will likely battle for playing time on the third pairing.

Recognized as a power-play specialist throughout his career, Barrie managed just 15 points in 41 games with the Nashville Predators last campaign. However, the 33-year-old racked up 55 points as recently as 2022-23 - a season he split between the Predators and Edmonton Oilers. He's hit the 50-point mark three other times in his career, all during his heyday with the Colorado Avalanche.
