McDavid not thinking about contract status

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid isn't worried about his long-term future with two years remaining on his contract.

"It's something that I'm not going to worry about or really deal with," McDavid told reporters on Tuesday. "It's a question that I'll answer once and that's ... I'm worried about this year. I'm worried about being ready for the season - both myself personally and the group. That's where my focus is at. It's not on anything else. That stuff takes care of itself. It's not something that I'm worried about."

McDavid is entering the seventh season of the eight-year, $100-million contract he signed with Edmonton in July 2017.

The Oilers took care of a big piece of business this summer, signing McDavid's running mate Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $112-million contract on Sept. 3.

"Well-deserved," McDavid said. "He deserves every penny. (I'm) happy he's here for a real long time."

The 27-year-old McDavid led the Oilers to Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy with a record 34 assists in 25 postseason games.

He registered his first 100-assist campaign last season, finishing with 132 points in 76 games. McDavid enters the 2024-2025 season just 18 points shy of reaching 1,000 in his career.
