Gretzky Oilers jersey could break auction record for hockey memorabilia
Wayne Gretzky could soon add another record to his name.
The jersey Gretzky wore during his final game with the Edmonton Oilers is being sold by Grey Flannel Auctions, which expects it to fetch as much as $1.4 million when the auction closes June 5, according to Marty Klinkenberg of the Globe and Mail. As of Wednesday, bidding had already reached $1 million.
"It is the most important hockey uniform in existence," Grey Flannel Auctions owner Michael Russek said of the Gretzky jersey. Russek added, "He was (the) greatest player in history and he wore this jersey at the crescendo of his career."

The current record for a hockey jersey sold at auction is $1.275 million, set in 2010 by Paul Henderson's 1972 Summit Series jersey.
The Great One wore this jersey in the Oilers' 1988 Stanley Cup-clinching win over the Boston Bruins. Grey Flannel describes the jersey as "covered in champagne stains" from the ensuing locker room celebration.
The game marked Gretzky's final appearance in an Oilers uniform, as he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings three months later.
