Report: Vikings to explore adding veteran QB to challenge McCarthy

J.J. McCarthy isn't guaranteed to be the Minnesota Vikings' starting quarterback next season, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

The Vikings plan to look at established quarterback options through free agency or a trade this offseason, sources told Russini. But Minnesota isn't planning on moving on from McCarthy even if it adds a veteran to challenge him.

McCarthy has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent play in his first season as the full-time starter. The No. 10 overall pick from 2024 has missed seven games this season due to various ailments, including an ankle sprain, fractured throwing hand, and a concussion.

He's thrown for more interceptions (12) than touchdowns (11) in the nine starts he did make and has compiled a 5-4 record.

McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to meniscus surgery. Minnesota went 14-3 that season with Sam Darnold as its starting quarterback. However, Darnold and Daniel Jones both left in free agency, clearing a path for McCarthy to take the starting job in 2025.

The 8-8 Vikings, already eliminated from playoff contention, head into the season finale trying to finish a disappointing campaign on a high. They take on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
