Report: Freeman among candidates for Giants' coaching vacancy
Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman is among several candidates in consideration for the New York Giants' head coaching vacancy, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.
Freeman, 39, is also expected to garner interest from other NFL organizations.
The Giants are looking for a new coach after firing Brian Daboll in November. Daboll was 10 games into his fourth season with the franchise.
Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was promoted to interim coach after Daboll's dismissal. The Giants are 0-3 with Kafka at the helm, and have four games remaining in the regular season.
Freeman, meanwhile, has led Notre Dame to an impressive 43-12 record over the past four seasons. He helped guide the Fighting Irish to the CFP title game last season, finishing with a 14-2 mark. The Ohio native signed a four-year contract extension last December that runs through the 2030 campaign.
Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua acknowledged that the school is aware of the growing interest surrounding its coach.
"Everybody has eyes on Marcus," Bevacqua said Tuesday, per ESPN's Adam Rittenberg. "College has eyes on Marcus; NFL has eyes on Marcus. I bet Hollywood has eyes on Marcus. He's the absolute best coach in the country for Notre Dame, full stop, one of the greatest college coaches in the country."
Bevacqua also shared that Notre Dame intends to re-evaluate Freeman's contract annually to ensure that he's among the highest-paid coaches in the country.
