Purdy hoping for drama-free, respectful extension talks
Quarterback Brock Purdy would like a speedy negotiation with the San Francisco 49ers ahead of a potential contract extension this offseason.
"More than anything for me, I want to be able to handle business the right way and do it in a respectful manner and get back to my team as fast as I can to get going to get better, to grow together," Purdy said, according to the Mercury News' Cam Inman.
He added: "I'm not the kind of guy that wants to have any kind of drama associated with anything. I'm here for this organization and for my teammates in this locker room. I want to be very professional about it."
Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which will see him earn $5.2 million after he made the Pro Bowl last season, per Inman. His new deal is anticipated to be the richest in 49ers history.
"I'm not really sure what it will look like or entail, but I know that I'm the guy for this organization, and I can do what it takes to help lead us where we want to go," Purdy said.
San Francisco hasn't been prompt to strike long-term deals with some of the team's stars recently, including Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, and Brandon Aiyuk. However, the 49ers did sign Jimmy Garoppolo to a then-record deal in February 2020.
The Niners appeared to strike gold by selecting Purdy with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Iowa State product has led the club to a conference championship game appearance and Super Bowl LVIII.
Purdy missed San Francisco's season finale after he injured his throwing elbow against the Detroit Lions. He plans to rest his arm for the remainder of January before he resumes throwing in February. His goal is to be fully healthy and back with his teammates long term.
"More than anything, I want to be here for my guys in the locker room," Purdy said. "I want to be in San Francisco and play my football career here. I love it here, and I want to do whatever it takes to be here."
